Condensation-induced self-patterning of a thin clayey layer

چکیده
Abstract We show through laboratory experiments that the self-patterning of a thin clayey layer can be triggered by condensation. The natural sediment used in was highly polydisperse granular paste with smectite clay fine fraction. Under certain physicochemical conditions, condensation induces solid-to-liquid transition layer, resulting flow and formation band structures. These results suggest physical mechanism for patterns commonly observed on humid walls underground cavities, referred to as vermiculations.

Phase transformation kinetics and self-patterning in misfitting thin films
We outline a computational approach for the study of phase transformations in misfitting thin films and then investigate the kinetics of a transformation to assess the role of heterogeneous nucleation sites, formed in the vicinity of misfit dislocations, in the self-patterning of these systems. Both computer simulation and analytical methods are employed to analyze spatio-temporal correlations ...
متن کاملBuffer Induced Magnetic Patterning of Ultrathin Co Layer
The possibility of magnetic anisotropy engineering of ultrathin Co films in the scale of several dozen nanometers is investigated by magnetooptical magnetometry. In Au/Co/Au sandwiches the spin reorientation transition from the out-of-plane to the in-plane configuration is observed, when Co layer thickness exceeds 1.9 nm. Molybdenum as the underlayer suppresses the Co thickness range for which ...
متن کاملLayer-by-layer self-assembly and disassembly of single charged inorganic small molecules: towards surface patterning.
The patterning of layer-by-layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte multilayers with metal ions is important for the facile fabrication of circuits or selective catalysis. The strategy includes two issues: the incorporation of metal ions and their controlled assembly-disassembly, which require a good understanding of the assembly mechanism. Therefore, we explored the LbL assembly between a polycation, poly-...
متن کاملFracture patterns induced by desiccation in a thin layer.
We study a theoretical model of mud cracks, that is, the fracture patterns resulting from the contraction with drying in a thin layer of a mixture of granules and water. In this model, we consider the slip on the bottom of this layer and the relaxation of the elastic field that represents deformation of the layer. Analysis of the one-dimensional model gives results for the crack size that are c...
